Die Mari fliehen bei dem Nahen von Fremden, und bei *) Bei dem Jahrestribut der (wilden) Maria (oder Madya Gond) "the officer of the Rayah having beaten a drum outside a village, hides himself, and then the villagers bring out their tribute to the appointed spot". (mit "a singular character for truthfulness and honesty"). Die (um- herziehenden) Maris are truthful and honest, and so exceedingly timid, that the whole population of a village will flee on the approach of a stranger (unter den Gond). The Gonds are among themselves honest, faithfull and trusthworthy, courageous in some points, und truthful as regards faults they have committed, (exceptionally faithful and obedient to his employer, so much so, that he would not hesitate to commit any crime at his order and sooner, than turn informer, would himself die), nämlich "the really wild Gonds, who have not become contaminated by contact with spurious civilisation" (s. Hislop). Die Dhur Gonds (the lowest of the race) "are so remarkably simple and honest, even the wildest of the tribes, that they will fulfill any agreement, which they make, no matter the difficulties in the way and the personal distress, which they may have to endure (s. Ster- ring). Their word (bei den Khond) may be wholly relied on, and they will never desert those, to whom they have promised to adhere, or betray those, they have engaged to protect (s. Jenkins). gleiche Aufrichtigkeit und Treue (gegen den Herrn) wird

scrupulöse Gewissenhaftigkeit übertreibt bei den Gond die
Ceremonialgesetze, wo sie solche von den Hindu angenommen,
bis zum Waschen des Holzes vor Verwendung zur Feuerung,
